BaxterBatiks is owned and operated by Darcy Whitten in Bar Harbor, Maine
Darcy grew up traveling the world using art as an outlet for her life experiences. Her family lived in Nigeria in the early nineties for two and a half years, which impacted her life and greatly influenced her artwork. During a residency program in college, Darcy returned to Nigeria and studied the art of Batik. Working closely with the Udubrae family in the city of Jos, Darcy learned the basics of this art form. Darcy continues to use these West African methods of batik, but has also adopted techniques from other cultures to create her own style within this medium.
Darcy graduated from College of the Atlantic in 2007 with a primary focus in fine arts. In addition to batiking, Darcy is an avid gardener and spends as much time outdoors hiking, climbing, and cycling as possible.
